A small cross Schitzu/Yorkie was stolen from a car parked in the San Fulgencio Lidl car park at 1.30pm on 10 April.

60 & 70s Night

Fun Dog Show

The APAH Fun Dog Show held on 5 April 2008 was a great success. There was a good turnout from members of the public and plenty of four-legged entrants in the various classes.

The APAH Kennels at Campoverde has now closed. Prospective adopters should note that there are no APAH animals at our former kennels at Campoverde and that this site is no longer being used by APAH.

Many will have read the story of little Benito, the blinded Catalan Sheepdog, rescued from appalling conditions and certain death by volunteers from APAH (Asociacion Protectora de Animales Horadada) after being found chained up on a farm just outside Pilar de la Horadada.

Death of an Eagle Owl

The Eagle Owl pictured here was electrocuted on a high tension electricity cable in Campoverde over the Christmas holiday. Apparently before the owl was killed, over a period of two or three weeks, several squirrels were also electrocuted at the same spot. Unfortunately no one thought of raising the alarm, resulting in the very sad death of the Eagle Owl, the wing span of which was over one and a half metres.

APAH is one of the leading local charities and is involved with the rescue and rehoming of abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats in Pilar de la Horadada and the surrounding areas. To date we have rehomed more than 1300 animals but to continue this important work, we need to strengthen the unpaid volunteer teams at our charity shop at Avenida Siete Higüeras, 14 and our Sunday Market at Pinar de la Campoverde.

Animal lovers in Pilar de la Horadada are celebrating after an agreement was reached with the town hall to save the dogs housed at APAH's (Asociación Protectora de Animales Horadada) rescue centre. Charity bosses had been told to vacate their premises by October 31 following complaints over noise from local residents and it was feared that scores of animals would have to be put down. However a last-minute deal was struck at the town hall this week over the dogs' future.

APAH Takes to the Streets!

At Noon on Thursday 18 October 2007 we will commence a march to the Ayuntamiento from the Church square in Pilar de la Horadada. APAH cannot continue to use the private sanctuary it is currently using after 31 October 2007 and time is fast running out to re-home and relocate the animals in our care.

After a Saturday of storms and torrential rain everyone was relieved and pleased to see Sunday dawn dry and bright. This encouraged around 50 visitors to come to the kennels which resulted in two formal dog and one cat adoption.

Fine for Maltreatment of an Animal

The following is a recent press release by The Town Hall of Pilar de la Horadada: The Town Hall of Pilar de la Horadada has imposed a new fine for an offence under the Municipal Ordinance for the Protection of Animals. The fine of just over six thousand euros was imposed against Sra A.V.P. of Pilar de la Horadada for "the practice of mutilations, namely the amputation of the ears and tail of a dog, without veterinary control." The dog, a Spanish Galgo, had previously been adopted from APAH. The acts were qualified as a major infraction as laid out in article 76.13 of the Ordinance.

Poison Warning for Pet Owners

Dog-walkers are being stopped by police from entering the woods near the La Marina beach after a number of incidents of poisoning. Police have reported that they were being extra careful this year after last year saw someone putting down tubs of poisoned water.

Fines for Abandoning Pets

Murcia Town Hall has issued a stiff warning to families considering abandoning their pets as they head off on summer holidays. It has come to the attention of the town hall that some people just dump their dogs in the street or the countryside when they go away on holiday.

Police Save Suffocating Dog

A couple who allegedly left their husky dog in a locked car for over two hours in the middle of the day may face a judge for the crime of abandonment. Torrevieja police were alerted to the animal by two separate phone calls and were alarmed to find the dog in a severely dehydrated condition inside the car by the Playa de Los Locos.

Pick It Up!

The Sanitation Department in San Javier has put out a plea to pet owners this summer to be responsible and pick up after their animals, with a special emphasis on keeping public places clean for all users. With the arrival of the summer period, there are many more dogs abandoned and roaming the streets, according to CERECO, the Centro de Recogida y Adopcion de Animales de Compaña.

New Premises

At present APAH has around 100 animals housed in its kennels which are situated on private land near to Pinar de Campoverde. However, the agreement to use this land is due to end on 31 October 2007 and we desperately need to find an alternative location for our kennels.

Help Save The Galgos

Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds) come to the rescue centre covered in burn marks, with slashes across their necks where someone has tried to cut their throat. They have also been received with broken legs and red-raw rings around their neck where someone has been unsuccessful in hanging them. This needs to STOP!

In conjunction with APAH, Ayuntamiento Pilar de la Horadada have produced a leaflet entitled Municipal By-Law for Animal Protection. The leaflet is in English and details current legislation relating to the protection of animals.

Lost or Found a Pet?

APAH has introduced a free, forum based Lost and Found service. Members of the public can post details of pets they have either lost or found in the hope of reuniting pet and owner. There is also a General Discussion board to post any pet/animal related items. Please let your friends, relatives and colleagues know about the APAH Lost and Found Notice Board as they may need to use it themselves one day.

The APAH website now features video footage of the dogs in its care. Potential adopters can now see a short video of the dog they are thinking of adopting. You will need the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player on your computer in order to see the video. Simply go to the details page for the dog you are interested in and if there is a video available you will be able to view it on that page using the embedded video player. Although we currently only have video of Molly and Scampi we will be adding more over the coming weeks so call back again soon.

UK National Microchipping Month

June sees the fifth annual National Microchipping Month in the UK. Organised by the Kennel Club veterinary surgeries will be holding microchipping clinics in their local area to support the campaign. Microchipping clinics are part of a nationwide effort to encourage and promote responsible pet ownership through microchipping as the best method of identifying pets in case they go missing. "Whether they're lost, stolen, strayed, or even involved in an accident, this is the only reliable way of ensuring your pet has a chance of getting back home to you safely." Said Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary; "So many people are still unaware of how simple, effective and necessary it is to microchip their pet. It's not until their pet goes missing that they really become aware of the value of the service they have available to them. That's why National Microchipping Month is so important. It promotes responsible pet ownership and raises awareness of how often pets do go missing and how easy microchipping really is." Here in Spain the same risk of losing your pet applies, perhaps even more so as pets over here tend to spend longer outdoors than they perhaps would in the UK. If your pet has not yet been microchipped get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.
